Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

The Health Insurance Portability And Accountability Act (HIPAA) was signed into law in 1996. It is legislation which provides directives for security provisions and data privacy, in order to keep everyone’s medical information safe and confidential.

The HIPAA Privacy regulations require health care providers and organizations like ASN to develop and follow procedures that ensure the confidentiality and security of protected health information (PHI) when it is transferred, received, handled, or shared.  This applies to all forms of PHI, including paper, oral, and electronic.  Furthermore, only the minimum health information necessary to conduct business is to be used or shared.

What does HIPAA mean to you?

  • All information in ASN records concerning individuals and families served by ASN is confidential.

  • Confidentiality is to be practiced both on and off duty.

  • Employees are required to ensure that all records, including electronic records, are safeguarded and protected from theft/damage while in their possession.
