This SOP outlines the steps for DSPs to take when they suspect or confirm a bed bug issue — whether in a person’s home or their own.
1. If You Suspect Bed Bugs in a Client’s Home:
- Do Not Panic or immediately alert the client in a way that might cause shame or distress.
- Document Your Observations: Note what you saw (e.g., bugs, bites, stains).
- Limit What You Bring Into/Out of the Home: Avoid setting bags on floors or soft furniture. Use a plastic tote when possible.
- Notify Your Supervisor Immediately: Provide details and discuss next steps.
- Do Not Attempt Treatment yourself. Proper pest control must be handled by professionals.
- Use Protective Measures: Consider shoe covers, washable clothing, and placing items in sealable plastic bags.
2. If You Discover Bed Bugs in Your Own Home:
- Notify Your Supervisor ASAP: Confidential support is available. Early reporting helps prevent spread.
- Avoid Visiting Client Homes Until Cleared: Work-from-home arrangements or alternate duties may be assigned.
- Follow Professional Treatment: You’ll be expected to schedule treatment with a licensed pest control service.
- Take Preventative Steps:
- Launder all clothing and bedding at high heat.
- Vacuum thoroughly and dispose of bags carefully.
- Encase mattresses and box springs in protective covers.
3. Prevention Best Practices
- Use a plastic or wipeable bag to carry work materials.
- Avoid placing personal items on soft surfaces in client homes.
- Regularly inspect and clean your personal vehicle and work equipment.
- Keep extra clothes in a sealed bag and change immediately if exposure is suspected.
